Hi,

Yesterday taking my Pajero out for a spin, hi went on some sand trails and had to connect the 4wd, but as soon has i connected some clank and toc sounds come from the left Wheel.
These sounds are only present with the 4WD engaged.

What can it be?

Its hard to diagnose noises so could you be a little more specific.

The sound comes from the front, i ear it better on my side, and it only happens when i engage the 4wd.
It's a clunk sound, that continues on the drive without stopping, but this only happens on 4wd, on 2wd no sound, i have the manual Hubs, and if i connect the hubs, on 2wd the sound doens't show...but it shows on 4wd.

I'm guessing CV joint. With hubs locked in and in 2wd the shafts are spinning but there really ain't no significant torque passing they them, while with 4x4 engaged they see a good but more load. Might be the difference between the CV clunking vs. just quietly slacking internally.

Model and year would be nice but I would concur with Rob for now in that it is likely a CV joint, split boot letting in sand and other debris or something stuck in the system.

Hey Guys,

Thanks for the Help, the Model is a Gen2 Long from 1997.
Regarding the CV Joint, i made a full repair on both sides, just did not change the 6 ball bearings they have inside the rest was all brand new.

Because of that i bought the AVN reinforced manual hubs, they are brand new installed.
Also bought the Actuator to change, still waiting to arrive.

If you have Super Select why do you need manual locking hubs? I am also puzzled as to how you could rebuild the CV joints and use the old balls.

The idea was to start changing everything to resolve the issue.
Could not find any new part with the balls, the only part available is a new one with 3 complete ball bearings on the same place the balls, and that doens't inspire me much confidence in terms of resistance.....but of course that's just my point of view....
