My crank mark is closer to the 10 than ATDC and i would say about an 8 !
What do these marks mean ?
You will have to excuse all the questions but this will be my first timing belt change as i have allways steered clear of the
" danger zone"
Quite happy messing about changing this and that Exhausts, brakes, springs, etc but the thought of the timing belt was always a bit out of my league if you know what i mean.
Any help is very much appreciated. |

Took the bottom pulley and cover off and all my timing marks line up spot on !!
The crank position sensor was minging covered in oil/bits of balance belt etc (what does this do anyway)
I have a oil leak from crankshaft is this an easy fix ?
It seems the more i take off the more there is to fix !!! |

if the crankshaft leak is at the front it,s only a seal you can pop it out and just tap a new one into place using a large socket,as for the crank sensor it sends a signal to the ecu to sort out fuel |

The sensor was so gunked up i would be amazed if it was still working but would that affect my poor starting ?
Oil seal, timing kit etc etc etc ordered, then i just need to do the EGR and replace the oil cooler and front bumper support and bumper and air con rad ( as the last owner must have tried to squash a boulder with the front of the truck )
And then i can address the low compression on 2 and 3 cylinder, oh and a valet and then.............. |

Took the EGR off while awaiting parts and it is almost totally gunked up with soot. Is there any benefit in cleaning it before i blank it off ? |

IS there a trick to replacing timing tensioners ??
Try as i might i can not either....get the spring back on its stay if i attach tensioner first...or get enough movement in tensioner by levering it on its adjustment to get anywhere near getting the timing belt on. |

the way i do it.. fit the tensioner and do up the bolt finger tight..fit spring so it,s on the tensioner finger tight the spring retaining nut..using a deap socket and extension fit on the other bit of the spring and push it towards the tensioner and towards the engine tighten the spring nut then pull the socket off,it has to be done in one swift movement |

I will give that a go tomorrow as i have tried every other way and the 1 and only time i got it on and levered it towards the water pump the spring actually bent the bar it sits on ,on the tensioner and slipped off the end....
This motor is doing my nut in, found the problem with the lack of power and smoke going up hill (well one of the problems ) the Turbo actuator is gooshed hence no turbo kicking in so just another thing to add to the LONG list,
Thanks for the tip Hutchy |
