Hello,

Whilst I wait for the RAC..

My 53 plate gen 3 has, whilst pulling out on a roundabout, it would not engage Drive and was flicking neutral and drive on the dash. Looks like it lost all the oil from the gearbox! It has hosed the engine bay down on the very front.

It looks like it came out at pressure. Any ideas what it could be and do you think the gearbox is now dead?

Thanks in advance.

PS: just had the flashing diff error fixed. Doh!

Typical response time from the RAC in this area is 3.5/4.5 hours, they are not the best by a long way.

You have most probably burst an oil cooler pipe, they run from the gearbox to the bottom of the radiator and have short rubber hoses connected to 90 degree metal adaptors that connect to the bottom tank. Hopefully it is a rubber hose as the adaptors were not available when I needed some a few years back.

The gearbox should be fine but it needs to be recovered on a flatbed as towing any distance could cause damage.

Thanks for the update. I was eventually picked up just before midnight, had called the RAC at 13:30!

I had similar happen to me, but for me it was the pipework that goes to and from the gearbox to the oil cooler. The pipes were corroded in several places. The replacement Mitsi parts are coated with a plastic coating to stop them getting weathered. It isn't actually a hard job to do, I am sure that I posted about it....... about 6 or so years ago

The pressure is quite high, so the fluid sprays well and the system empties quite quickly. It is worth checking the pipework while you have it all in bits, just in case, it will save you having to do it all again.

Well, I didn't know there are two oil coolers. The little one you can see and the one embedded in the main radiator!

Still at the garage!

And it goes on and on!

Picked it up, got home.and checked the oil level. The oil level is a mile over the hot level! Well not a mile but you get the idea.  Not 100% sure that they used SPIII either.

Back to the garage tomorrow.

Yeah I find that trusting a service garage with Shogun gear box work very difficult. It was bad enough getting the atf changed with the MK3 but now with the MK4 with no dip stick I really don’t know where to turn. I hate using Mitsubishi but I may have no choice.

She lives!

After syringing out nearly 2 litres of oil normality seems to have been restored. Only trouble is I keep hearing noises - which is probably just being over sensitised!

Spoke too soon, I suspect one of the clutch rings has failed. All is fine until the engine gets up to temperature. Changes through the gears no problem, the issue occurs when I am decelerating to 30mph, and causes a loud ringing. Will try to find an auto box specialist, I think this is the end.  Shame as the car, which is a 53 plate, has little rust and (apart from the cigarette socket) everything works.

OMG, what can go wrong next! The two of bolts holding the gearbox support have sheared off.  More £££.

Now fixed, fingers crossed. Broken bolts replaced, transmission oil and filter changed. Runs through all the gears no problem, 2H and 4H selection works. Slight whine still when decelerating at around 30 MPH.
